Shutters
Interior window shutters usually serve the function of controlling household privacy and the amount of light that enters a room. Inside events can be hidden from view and kept in the dark.
In this instance, however, discarded shutters are re-purposed. The shutter substrate is now interpreted as a window with a view of a landscape. The viewer is enticed to see what is inside and to move the louvers to find out. The opened slats bring to light the very personal and horrific narratives of molestation, incest, marital rape and verbal abuse that can happen within homes.
These stories are based on confidences shared with me by others. These individuals have shown great courage in acknowledging and revealing their stories. They have shown incredible resilience and an ability to reclaim their self-worth. I feel a responsibility
to bring their experiences into a public forum.
